Western Province, Kenya

Western Province is an area of Kenya, bordering Uganda west of the Eastern Rift Valley inhabited mainly by the Luhya people.

It is composed of four districts: Bungoma, Busia , Kakamega and Vihiga . Kenya's second highest mountain, Mount Elgon, is in Bungoma District.

Economy

Farming is the mainstay of the economy in the province. Major crops include maize (subsistence), sugar cane, millet and sorghum. In addition, dairy farming is practiced all over the province in small herds.

Western Kenya has many large factories, including sugar processing plants (4 factories), the largest paper factory in Africa (Pan Paper Mills), and chemical processors. Despite this, living standards are generally low and social amenities like running water and electricity are not available to the majority of the province's residents.

Climate

The climate is tropical, with heavy rains in the early months of the year.
