The Straße des 17. Juni or in English "Street of June 17th" is a major boulevard in central Berlin, Germany. It is the western continuation of 'Unter den Linden', which stops at the Brandenburg Gate. Halfway through the street is the Berlin victory column. On the eastern half of the street the border to East Berlin was the Berlin Wall.
In West Berlin the street was re-named 'Straße des 17. Juni' to commemorate the uprising of the East Berliners on June 17, 1953. The revolt had been mainly targeted against raises in work quotas, with some political demands thrown in, but was (re)interpreted by western media as a direct uprising against the Soviet Union and the government of the German Democratic Republic.
Until some time after reunification, June 17th was, as German Unity Day, a national holidy in West Germany.
