Mr. Ollivander

Mr. Ollivander (his first name has not been given yet) is a fictional character in the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling.

Mr. Ollivander runs Ollivander's, a wand shop in Diagon Alley. Ollivander is (so far) a minor character in the series, so the backstory on him and his shop is not clear. Ollivander's shop seems to be the only one students from Hogwarts go to to buy their wand, as other wand shops in Britain have not been mentioned.

Ollivander shows up only twice in the five books so far. The first time is in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone when Harry Potter is buying his wand for the first time, on July 31, 1991. Ollivander remembers every wand sold. Harry's wand ends up containing a feather from the same phoenix that supplied the feather in Voldemort's wand (and that phoenix is Fawkes). Curiously, it was Ollivander's idea to choose this wand from the shelf. He mentions that he expects "great things" from Harry Potter in the future. Ollivander's remarks make Harry uneasy.

Ollivander's second appearance was at the Weighing of the Wands at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on November 13, 1994. Ollivander's job was to make sure that the wands belonging to each of the contestants of the Triwizard Tournament was in good shape. Once again, his presence makes Harry uncomfortable as he seems to pay extra long attention to Harry's wand.

It is unknown whether Ollivander will show up in the sixth and seventh books.

Mr. Ollivander is played by John Hurt in the film version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
