Mikhail Muravyov

Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov may refer to the following historical persons of the Imperial Russia.


Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov, Count (1845-1900), Russian diplomat and statesman, known for his activities in the Russian Far East.


Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov, Russian diplomat and statesman, appointed Governor General of Lithuania by Alexander II of Russia. Muravyov was known as "hangman of Wilno" for his harsh policy of Russification after the Polish January Uprising of 1863. He was the one to order execution of Kastus Kalinouski. He instituted a complete ban on Latin alphabet and Lithuanian printed matter. The ban was lifted only in 1904. As for Belarus lands he used to say: "What Russian rifle did not succeed in doing, will be finished off by Russian schools" (что не доделал русский штык – доделает русская школа.)
