Ljig - a small town in cenral Serbia.
Ljig is an almost new settlement, founded at the beginning of this century. It is mentioned for the first time in 1911., during the building of the railroad tracks Lajkovac- Gornji Milanovac.
When the railway started to work in 1917., very nice railway station was built near today's center of Ljig The primary schoole was founded in 1907. Remains of Vavedenje monastery are telling us about great history and the life of XI century. Two impressive sarcophagus from that time are supposed to be gravestones of two Serbian rulers Despot Djurdje and Stefan Brankovic. The legend says that despot's wife, Jerina, was burried with them. The basement of what we call Ljig today, is one little road settlement with municipal court, school, inn and two stores, two weavingmills, three tailors and several houses, grouped under the Gukosi hill, near the River Ljig.
That part of the village was called "on the River Ljig". In the "List of districts", at the time of Austrian occupation of Serbia(1717-1739) Gukosi are mentioned nowhere; it appeared latter in 1818. as a settlement with 50 houses, and in 1822. as a settlement with 48 houses. The River Ljig is mentioned in XVII century in the records of Evlija Celebija, as "LIGmehri", which rises from Kara Dag, in the village Baht (today's Ba) and flows into Kolubara near Valjevo.Till the end of the last century, Ljig was little road settlement near the river, and it wasn't neither economic nor administrative center. Battle on the Kolubara River came into the history of Serbia, history of wars and textbooks of all important military academiesThere is, also, monument on the Rajac, and some other monuments as a testimony. Between two world wars, Ljig belonged to the community of Gukosi, together with villages Lipovica, Boblija, Petakovac and Vrgnjica. Ljig separated from Gukosi in 1922. School was built in 1928., and health station in 1930. Ljig, also, got a church, because till then, people from Ljig used to go to the church in Moravci which is built on the foundations of Hadzi Ruvim and Hadzi Djera's castle. Ljig is surrounded by two mountains: Rajac and Rudnik. It is, still, an undeveloped region of Serbia, struck by earthquake last year and drought this year.

. Ljig is economic and cultural center of the community with primary school, high school, public library with cinema, health center and post office. Community has 279 m2 and 15 924 citizens. Ljig has 3 000 citizens.
