There are three different levels of cities according to the administrative divisions of the Republic of China, namely municipalities, provincial cities and county-controlled cities.

Banciao is the most populous county-controlled city. Except Taipei and Kaohsiung, all cities are in the Taiwan Province. Except Makung, all cities are on the island of Taiwan.
There is no city in the two counties (Kinmen County and Matsu County) of the Fukien Province.
