The Lima Metro (also called Tren Urbano) provides Peru's capital, Lima, with mass transit services. It is considered one of the newest urban railway systems in South America.
Its first line was inaugurated in 2003, but many stations have still not yet been opened.
During the inauguration, Peru's president, Alejandro Toledo, highlighted that although Lima's urban train project was initiated during the tenure of former president Alan García (1985-1990), it has presently been concluded by the Municipality of Lima with the current Executive Branch support. It took various years to complete this important project, especially due to Peru's struggling economy during the 90's. Estimates of its construction cost were at $317 million.
Lima's urban train has been tapped as a faster, safer, and more secure form of transportation for Peru's capital. Its 9.8 km starting at station 'Villa El Salvador' up to 'Puente Atocongo' is projected to significantly help in the city's development.
The urban train of Lima currently has seven operational stations in the following order:
- Villa El Salvador
- El Sol
- Pumacahua
- Villa María
- Miguel Iglesias
- San Juan
- Atocongo
