Kitgum

Kitgum is a district in northern Uganda of 9,773.63 square kilometers. The capital town of Kitgum Town is 452 km from the Ugandan capital city of Kampala. The population of the district is 283,546, according to the 2002 census, and most economic activity is subsistence agriculture. Along with Gulu and Pader, Kitgum compose Acholiland, which is considered to be the heartland of the Acholi ethnic group. The district is composed of two counties: Lamwo and Chua. On 4 December 2001, Kitgum was divided in two, creating the current Kitgum and Pader districts. The district is bordered by Gulu, Pader, Kotido districts and, to the north, Sudan.

Since 1986, it has been affected by the Lord's Resistance Army insurgency. There are numerous internally displaced person camps throughout the district.
