Siege of Tobruk

(Redirected from Battle of Tobruk)

The Siege of Tobruk was a lengthy confrontation between Axis and Allied forces in the North African Campaign of World War II. It started on 10 April 1941 as Generalleutnant Erwin Rommel invested the fort, besieging it for months, and launched attacks against the fort that were unsucceful. Finally, after a failed, but nearly succesful, British attempt to relieve the fort, Rommel retreated and the fort was relieved. It was the longest siege in British military history. However, it was also the first land defeat for German forces in World War II.
