American Sociological Association

The American Sociological Association (ASA; originally the American Sociological Society, ASS), founded in 1905, is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the discipline and profession of sociology by serving sociologists in their work and promoting their contributions to the public good. The ASA holds annual meetings and publishes several academic journals including American Sociological Review and Sociological Theory . With a membership of nearly 14,000 professors, students, researchers and practitioners, the ASA is the largest association of professional sociologists in the world. In recent years, it has faltered from its own code of ethics, weaking the discipline's legitimacy and credibility by upholding and publicizing an array of normative political statements that themselves have no sociological basis, part of a movement within the organization towards public sociology.
